<description><![CDATA[ <b>CHICAGO – </b>The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) today announced its contract with Chicago Lighthouse to handle more than 160,000 expected calls every year to its offices across the state.  Approximately 25% of the staff is totally blind with the remaining staff being visually impaired.  The call center, located at Chicago Lighthouse's headquarters on Roosevelt Road, is currently employing 20 people trained to route callers to the agency's licensing or enforcement offices. IDFPR licenses and regulates more than one million professionals and businesses in Illinois.

<description><![CDATA[ <b>CHICAGO – </b>The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation today filed a formal complaint against Naveed Ahmed, a Certified Public Accountant, alleging violations of the Public Accounting Act.  Ahmed pleaded guilty last Friday (1/25/13) to wire fraud, mail fraud and preparing fraudulent Illinois Sales and Use tax returns on behalf of eight gas station owners in a scheme to evade paying $5 million in state sales tax. His brother Asif Waheed, who works for the accounting firm but is not a CPA, also pleaded guilty last week.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) announced today that a convenience store in central Illinois surrendered 41 boxes and 54 single containers of non-prescription colored contact lenses to IDFPR. The lenses have an approximate retail value of $1,600.  The Department's investigators were tipped off by a school nurse who contacted our office because a student sustained an eye injury from wearing contact lenses he/she purchased from a convenience store in town.  Colored lenses purchased without proper examinations and fittings put thousands of Illinois customers at risk of scratches, infections and potential blindness. ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ The Department was notified by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) that a fungal meningitis outbreak that has stricken 26 people in five states, leaving four individuals dead, has been reported to be caused by intrathecal methylprednisolone injections compounded by the New England Compounding Center (NECC) located in Framingham MA. While no cases have occurred in Illinois, NECC reported to the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy that these products were provided to facilities in Illinois. ]]></description>

Jay Stewart, Director of the Division of Professional Regulation signed the summary suspension order late Tuesday afternoon.  The department has the authority to temporarily suspend the license of professionals who it believes would pose an imminent danger to health and safety of patients or the general public.]]></description>

Governor Pat Quinn today signed two new housing laws to provide people with disabilities with more access to affordable rental housing, and to further protect homeowners from mortgage fraud. The supportive housing law makes $10 million in rental housing subsidies available over 15 years to eligible landlords. In addition, the governor announced the commitment of up to $40 million in Illinois Jobs Now! capital funds for developers of permanent supportive housing. These laws build on the governor's strong commitment to providing more housing options for people with disabilities, and to protecting consumers from predatory lenders.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ <b>CHICAGO – </b>– The regulations needed to implement the last piece of the Cemetery Oversight Act were recently adopted by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.  The new rules reflect changes in the Act adopted late last year by the General Assembly. Under the new rules, all cemeteries must obtain a license to operate a cemetery in Illinois or register as being fully or partially exempt from the Act.  The law has already created a Consumer Bill of Rights that requires cemeteries to provide a standardized price list to consumers and to enter into signed contracts with consumers who purchase burial rights.  Since 2011 Illinois cemeteries have been entering burial data into a statewide data base.  To date, over 67,000 burials have been entered into the database.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ <b>CHICAGO – </b>Earlier today, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) revoked the licenses of 11 health care workers who have been convicted of sex offenses or violent crimes against their patients.  These revocations are required by a new law signed by Governor Quinn last month.  HB 1271 (Public Act 97-0156) provides that the professional license of any health care worker who has been convicted of a sex offense or of a violent crime against their patients is permanently revoked without a hearing and further provides that sex offenders cannot be licensed as health care workers in Illinois.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ <b>CHICAGO – </b>Certain hair care products, primarily those used by hair care professionals for smoothing and straightening hair may produce formaldehyde even if that compound is not listed as an ingredient in the products, according to a warning issued today by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).   The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) warned that formaldehyde presents a health hazard if workers are exposed. It can irritate the eyes and nose; cause allergic reactions of the skin, eyes and lungs; and is linked to nose and lung cancer.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[ <b>CHICAGO – </b>The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation ("IDFPR") today entered into an agreement with Easy Money Express Company ("Easy Money Express"), of Carbondale, under which Easy Money Express has agreed to forgo further litigation regarding its license. Under this agreement, IDFPR revokes its earlier Revocation Order, an order presently being contested in an administrative hearing.  As is customary with an agreement, Easy Money Express explicitly did not admit any wrongdoing.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<b>CHICAGO - </b>Six months after the Cemetery Oversight Act's on-line database became active, more than 17,900 burials have been electronically recorded in the statewide database, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR) announced today.  IDFPR estimates that nearly 75% of burials in the State are now being entered into the database.  By creating the State's first comprehensive burial records database, families will have a place to turn if they are unable to find the location of a loved one's grave.]]></description>

The Springfield event is being co-hosted by State Senator Larry Bomke (R-Springfield), State Representative Raymond Poe (R-Springfield), State Representative Rich Brauer (R-Petersburg), and Springfield Mayor Frank Edwards. It will be the 18th stop in a statewide tour that began in the summer of 2009.]]></description>

Medical and Professional Service Corporations have long been required to register with IDFPR, and this law expands that requirement to cover LLCs established by licensed professions, including doctors and dentists.]]></description>
